  By Plane: Kathmandu to Paro (2,200m). Drive to Thimphu (65km, 1hr)

  After breakfast in Kathmandu, you will transfer to Kathmandu International Airport for your flight to Paro, Bhutan, one of the most scenic flights in the world. For the best views, sit on the left side of the plane on the way to Paro. On a clear day, you can see four of the world’s highest peaks—Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga—as well as Bhutanese giants like Jomolhari and Jichu Drake. Paro International Airport (2,235m) is famous for its challenging landing, requiring skilled pilots to navigate the narrow valley and steep mountains, with forested hills and traditional farmhouses appearing surprisingly close before the runway. Only Drukair and Bhutan Airlines operate this daylight-only route, and flights can be delayed due to weather, so flexibility is important.

  Upon arrival at Paro Airport, travelers are welcomed by its beautiful Bhutanese-style architecture, with the dry mountain air giving an immediate sense of the Himalayas. After finishing immigration and customs, you will drive to Thimphu, enjoying lovely views along the way, including the river meeting point at Chuzom and a stop at Tachog Lhakhang, an old temple reached by a traditional iron bridge. As you travel further, the quiet countryside slowly turns into the peaceful but lively capital city of Thimphu, which is famous for having no traffic lights. In the afternoon, you will visit important places like the National Memorial Chorten and Tashichho Dzong, where you can experience Bhutanese culture and spirituality. The day ends with a welcome dinner of traditional Bhutanese food, followed by a comfortable overnight stay in Thimphu with beautiful mountain views.

  Full-day City Tour in Thimphu

  After breakfast, your guide will take you on a full-day tour of Thimphu, where you will experience a mix of traditional culture and local life. Since many places close by 4:30 PM, the tour is planned to help you see as much as possible, starting with scenic views in the morning and ending with a visit to the main government building.

  • National Memorial Chorten: is a prominent stupa in Thimphu, built to honor Bhutanese leaders and serve as a place for daily worship and prayers.

  • Buddha Dordenma (Buddha Point)is a giant golden Buddha statue in Thimphu overlooking the valley, symbolizing peace and happiness.

  • Motithang Takin Preserve in Thimphu is a protected area home to Bhutan’s national animal, the takin, a unique and rare mountain goat-antelope.

  • National Institute for Zorig Chusumin Thimphu is a school where students learn Bhutan’s traditional arts and crafts, such as painting, sculpture, and weaving.

  • The Folk Heritage Museum (Phelchey Toenkhyim)in Thimphu showcases traditional Bhutanese village life, displaying old homes, tools, and everyday artifacts.

  • Jungshi Handmade Paper Factoryin Thimphu produces traditional Bhutanese paper using local plants, offering visitors a chance to see the paper-making process and buy unique handmade products.

  • Bhutan Postal Museumin Thimphu displays the history of Bhutan’s postal service, featuring rare stamps, old mail equipment, and interesting stories about communication in the kingdom.

  • Tashichho Dzong (Fortress of the Glorious Religion)is a majestic monastery and government center in Thimphu, showcasing traditional Bhutanese architecture and serving as a hub for religion and administration.

  Thimphu to Paro. Visit Paro

  After breakfast in Thimphu, enjoy a drive through deep river valleys with forested mountains. Stop first at Chuzom, where the Thimphu and Paro rivers meet, and see three stupas—Bhutanese, Tibetan, and Nepalese—built together to protect the valley. Before reaching Paro, visit Tamchog Lhakhang, a 15th-century temple, and cross its famous iron-chain suspension bridge over the rushing river for a true Bhutanese experience. In Paro Valley, have lunch at a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse, with colorful timber-and-mud-brick houses showing rural life. Typical dishes include red rice, Ema Datshi (chili and cheese), and Jasha Maru (spicy chicken), usually served on floor mats in a sunny upper room.

  • Ta Dzong (National Museum of Bhutan):also known as the National Museum of Bhutan, is a historic watchtower in Paro that houses a rich collection of Bhutanese art, religious artifacts, and cultural treasures, offering insights into the country’s history and heritage.
  • Rinpung Dzong (Paro Dzong):is a grand fortress-monastery overlooking the Paro River. Built in the 17th century, it serves as both a religious center and an administrative office, featuring traditional Bhutanese architecture with impressive courtyards, temples, and beautiful murals.
  • Nyamai Zam Bridge:in Paro is a traditional wooden cantilever bridge that spans the Paro River, showcasing classic Bhutanese engineering and offering picturesque views of the surrounding valley.
  • Kyichu Lhakhang:in Paro is one of Bhutan’s oldest and most sacred temples, built in the 7th century. It is believed to protect the valley and is famous for its beautiful architecture, ancient statues, and spiritual significance in Bhutanese Buddhism.

  Spend the late afternoon walking along Paro’s main street, where all the buildings have matching hand-painted wooden fronts. It’s a good place to shop for woven textiles, prayer wheels, and hand-carved masks. Afterward, unwind with a traditional hot stone bath called Dotsho, where red-hot river stones are put into a wooden tub with water and medicinal Artemisia leaves, helping to relax your joints and skin. End the day with dinner at a cozy local café, trying Bhutanese food, craft beers like "Druk 11000," or local coffee while thinking back on the day’s experiences.

  Hike to Taktsang Monastery

  Start your day with a short 20-minute drive from Paro town to the trailhead at Ramthangka, leaving early to avoid the sun and crowds. The hike begins at about 2,600 meters, going through forests of blue pine, oak, and rhododendron, with colorful prayer flags along the way. After 1.5–2 hours, you reach a wooden cafeteria halfway up, where you can enjoy Bhutanese butter tea (Suja) and biscuits while seeing your first clear view of the monastery on the cliff. The trail continues for another 45–60 minutes, getting steeper, until you reach a high lookout with a large prayer wheel. From there, you descend around 700 stone steps into a gorge, cross a bridge over a sacred 60-meter waterfall, and climb about 200 steps to the monastery entrance. Inside, all bags and electronics are left in lockers, and photography is not allowed. You can explore narrow corridors, dimly lit altars, and the cave where Guru Padmasambhava meditated for more than three years, surrounded by the scent of butter lamps and monks’ chanting.

  The return hike takes 1.5–2 hours and can be hard on the knees, so trekking poles are helpful. Afterward, enjoy a late lunch of red rice and Ema Datshi to regain energy. Later, relax with a traditional hot stone bath (Dotsho), where hot river stones are placed in a wooden tub with medicinal Artemisia leaves to ease sore muscles. Finish the day with a calm walk through Paro’s cobblestone streets, lined with traditional painted shops. It’s a great time to shop for hand-woven textiles, souvenirs, or sit at a café and watch the sunset over Rinpung Dzong, reflecting on your memorable visit to one of Bhutan’s most sacred sites.

  Transfer to Paro International Airport for departure

  After breakfast, start the morning drive from Thimphu to Paro. The road follows the Wang Chhu (Thimphu River) and passes Chuzom, where it meets the Pa Chhu (Paro River), marked by three colorful stupas in Bhutanese, Tibetan, and Nepalese styles. Visit Tamchog Lhakhang, a 15th-century temple built by the famous bridge-builder Thangtong Gyalpo, and walk across the old iron suspension bridge over the turquoise river. Entering Paro Valley, you’ll see terraced rice fields and traditional multi-story farmhouses decorated with symbols of good luck. Depending on your flight, explore the National Museum (Ta Dzong), the historic Rinpung Dzong, and stroll through Paro town for local handicrafts. Departure from Paro Airport is exciting, with a steep climb and sharp turns to clear the surrounding peaks—don’t forget to photograph the temple-like terminal. On the 60-minute flight to Kathmandu, enjoy views of Bhutanese peaks like Jomolhari and Jichu Drake, cross into Nepal to see Kanchenjunga and the Everest massif, including Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam. The plane descends into the green Kathmandu Valley, where you clear immigration and step into the lively streets of the city, ending your unforgettable Bhutan adventure.
