  Today, you will have the opportunity to explore Kathmandu with our experienced city tour guide. Our itinerary includes several remarkable sites:

  SWOYAMBHUNATH STUPA (MONKEY TEMPLE): Start your day atop the hill at Swoyambhunath, one of Nepal’s oldest religious complexes, offering stunning 360-degree views of the Kathmandu Valley.

  • The Experience: Climb the 365 stone steps to the east for a traditional entry, or drive to the western parking lot for easier access.
  • What to See: The central white stupa with Buddha’s “all-seeing eyes,” the Hariti Temple (dedicated to the goddess of smallpox and protector of children), and the playful rhesus macaques that give the site its nickname.
  • Pro Tip: Walk clockwise around the stupa while spinning the prayer wheels.

  After sightseeing in Kathmandu, leave for Nagarkot, which is a 32 km (20-mile) drive that typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic, particularly through Bhaktapur. The road winds through terraced hills, pine forests, and small villages, and you should arrive in Nagarkot by early evening.

  Once you check into your hotel, head to a balcony or viewpoint to enjoy the sunset. Nagarkot is renowned for its panoramic views of the Himalayas, including the Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang, and Jugal ranges, especially on clear evenings.   • Morning: Sunrises and Sacred Sites: Sarangkot Sunrise: Start your day before dawn. A 30-minute drive from Lakeside brings you to Sarangkot (1,600m). As the sun rises, the peaks of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and the iconic Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) turn from ghostly grey to brilliant gold. Note: If you’re feeling adventurous, the hill is also the primary takeoff point for paragliding.
  • Bindhyabasini Temple: On your way back down from Sarangkot, stop at this white pagoda-style temple. Dedicated to Goddess Bhagwati, it is one of Pokhara’s oldest and most important Hindu shrines. The atmosphere is often filled with the scent of incense and the sound of bells as devotees perform morning rituals.
  • Seti River Gorge (White Water): Hidden in the middle of the city, the Seti River flows through a remarkably narrow and deep chasm. From the bridge near the K.I. Singh area, you can look down into the milky-white waters rushing through the limestone gorge. It’s a brief but powerful reminder of the geological forces shaping the valley.
  • Mahendra Cave & Bat Cave: Head to the northern end of the valley to explore Mahendra Cave, a large limestone cavern with natural stalactite and stalagmite formations. Just a short walk away is the Bat Cave (Chamero Gufa); it is darker and more rugged, home to thousands of horseshoe bats clinging to the ceiling.

  Lunch at Lakeside: Return to the Lakeside area for a wide variety of local and international cuisines with a view of Phewa Lake.

  • Devi’s Fall (Patale Chhango): Visit the "Underworld Waterfall." The Pardi Khola stream disappears into a deep tunnel and seemingly vanishes into the earth. Right across the street is the Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave, where you can walk deep underground to see the base of the waterfall from inside the cave.
  • World Peace Pagoda (Shanti Stupa): End your day at this massive white stupa atop Anadu Hill. You can reach it by driving or by taking a boat across Phewa Lake and hiking up (approx. 45 minutes). It offers the most famous panoramic view of the lake, the city, and the mountains at sunset.

  Pokhara to Tansen

  After breakfast in Pokhara, drive with clear mountain views before the clouds appear, seeing the Annapurna range and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) as you climb toward Naudanda. The road then goes down into the Adhi Khola valley to Syangja Bazaar, a busy town surrounded by steep, terraced rice fields—perfect for a short tea break or a walk through the Thakali Tole market. Continuing to Waling, one of Nepal’s cleanest small cities, you’ll enjoy a wider valley and a brief break from the winding highway. In the afternoon, the road drops into the deep Kali Gandaki Gorge, where you cross the famous Ramdi Bridge connecting Gandaki and Lumbini provinces and may see small sacred caves used for ritual bathing and cremation. Then the highway climbs steeply about 1,000 meters toward Bartung before turning off to Tansen, the medieval capital of the Magar Kingdom. Late in the day, explore Tansen’s cobbled streets and Newari architecture, visiting Palpa Durbar and its museum, the octagonal Sitalpati pavilion with the nearby Baggi Dhoka gate, the three-tiered Amar Narayan Temple with detailed woodcarvings and stone walls, and local workshops making Palpali Dhaka, the town’s famous hand-woven fabric.

  Tansen to Lumbini

  After breakfast in Tansen, the drive starts with an exciting descent along the Siddhartha Highway, winding down the steep hills. You pass the cobblestone outskirts of Tansen, join the main highway at Bartung, and go through the Siddhababa Tunnel, which makes the journey safer by avoiding the old cliffside road. The scenery changes from pine and juniper forests to lush subtropical vegetation, with the Tinau River flowing beside you. Coming out of the hills, you reach Butwal, the main town of Lumbini Province, where you can visit Siddha Baba Temple and enjoy lunch. From Butwal, the road becomes flat, crossing the fertile farmland of Rupandehi District and passing Bhairahawa and Gautam Buddha International Airport. The final 22 km to the Lumbini Monastic Zone take you through mustard fields, traditional villages, and slow-moving oxcarts, ending at Lumbini Gate, where the peaceful, sacred atmosphere of this world-famous Buddhist site awaits.

  The Maya Devi Temple (The Sacred Garden): This is the spiritual heart of Lumbini. The marker stone inside the temple identifies the exact spot where Queen Maya Devi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama in 623 B.C.

  • The Ashoka Pillar: Erected by Emperor Ashoka in 249 B.C., the inscription on this sandstone pillar provides the historical evidence that this is indeed the birthplace of the Buddha.
  • The Puskarni Pond: The sacred pool where Queen Maya Devi is believed to have bathed before giving birth and where the infant Buddha had his first purification bath.

  The Monastic Zone: Divided by a long central canal, this area features monasteries built by different Buddhist nations, showcasing a global diversity of architectural styles.

  • The East Monastic Zone (Theravada): Highlighted by the ornate Royal Thai Monastery (white marble) and the Mahamani Paya Pagoda of Myanmar.
  • The West Monastic Zone (Mahayana & Vajrayana): Featuring the stunning German Tara Foundation, the intricate Chinese monastery, and the colorful Korean Buddhist temple.

  The World Peace Pagoda (Shanti Stupa): Located at the northern end of the canal, this massive white stupa was built by Japanese Buddhists to inspire global harmony. The surrounding wetlands are a sanctuary for the rare Sarus crane, which is often seen stalking through the tall grass at sunset.

Each location offers details about the region's rich cultural heritage.

  Tilaurakot: The Ancient Shakya Capital: Located 27 km west of Lumbini, Tilaurakot is widely identified as the historical Kapilvastu. This is where Prince Siddhartha lived for 29 years before his Great Renunciation.

  • The Ruins: Explore the foundations of the eastern and western gates. The Eastern Gate is famously known as the "Mahabhinishkramana Dwara," the auspicious exit from which the prince left his palace in search of enlightenment.
  • Archaeological Sophistication: Recent 2024–2026 excavations have uncovered advanced urban planning, including ancient roads, drainage systems, and defensive walls dating back to the 8th century BC.
  • Kapilvastu Museum: Located nearby, it houses artifacts discovered at the site, including ancient coins, pottery, and jewelry that reflect the opulent lifestyle of the Shakya royals.

  Gotihawa (Birthplace of Krakuchhanda Buddha): Located 5 km southwest of Taulihawa, this quiet village is the birthplace of Krakucchanda Buddha, the first of the five Buddhas of the current kalpa (aeon).

  • Ashokan Pillar: Emperor Ashoka visited here in 249 BC and erected a stone pillar to mark the spot. Although the upper portion is missing, the 3.25 m stump remains in situ on its original masonry foundation.
  • The Votive Stupa: Adjacent to the pillar is a massive brick stupa dedicated to Krakucchanda Buddha. The site has a heavy, ancient energy, often overlooked by mainstream tourists.

  Kudan (Nigrodharama): Kudan is perhaps the most emotionally significant site in the circuit. It is identified as the Nigrodharama monastery, where the Buddha returned for the first time after attaining enlightenment.

  • The Meeting Point: This is where King Suddhodana met his son, Siddhartha, not as a prince but as the Enlightened One.
  • Rahula’s Ordination: Legend holds that the Buddha’s son, Rahula, was ordained as a monk here at the age of eight.
  • Architecture: The site features three large excavated mounds (stupas) and an ancient well that is still in use today. The brickwork here is particularly intricate, showing layers of reconstruction over centuries.

  Niglihawa (Birthplace of Kanakamuni Buddha): About 7 km northeast of Taulihawa lies Nigalisagar, a large pond where the Kanakamuni Buddha (the second Buddha of this aeon) was born.

  • Broken Ashokan Pillar: You will observe two fragments of an Ashokan pillar. The inscription in Brahmi script confirms that Ashoka enlarged the stupa of Kanakamuni Buddha and visited it in person during his 20th regnal year.
  • Historical Graffiti: Look for the 14th-century inscriptions by King Ripu Malla, who left his mark ("Om Mani Padme Hum") while on a pilgrimage through the region.

  Sagarhawa (The Site of the Massacre): Known locally as Lumbu Sagar (the Long Pond), the area is a somber forest site with a tragic history. Deeply somber and rarely visited, Sagarhawa (near the Jagdishpur Reservoir) is known as the "Palace of the Massacre of the Shakyas."

  • The Long Pond: The ruins sit on the banks of Lumbu Sagar, a long, rectangular pond. The atmosphere here is quiet and reflective, a stark contrast to the celebratory vibe of Lumbini.

  Lumbini to Bardia National Park

  After breakfast in Lumbini, you will start a smooth one-hour drive across the flat, fertile Terai plains to Butwal, passing busy market towns and yellow mustard fields along the Siddhartha Highway. From Butwal, the road turns north into the cooler hills of Gulmi, with winding paths leading to scenic viewpoints and cultural spots like Ridi (Ruru Kshetra), a holy riverside site with temples and wood carvings, and Tamghas, the gateway to Resunga Hill with stunning Himalayan views. Heading back down to the lowlands, the drive continues west on the East-West Highway through forested Churia Hills and the green landscapes of Banke National Park, also known as the “Tiger’s Gateway,” before reaching Kohalpur, a lively town perfect for a short rest or lunch. The final stretch turns south at Ambassa into rural Bardia District, where you’ll see traditional Tharu villages, mud-and-thatch houses, and peaceful farmland. Arriving in Thakurdwara near Bardia National Park, the air becomes cooler, the jungle sounds grow louder, and you leave the cultural landscapes behind to enter the heart of Nepal’s wilderness. Along the way, there will be short stops for refreshments and comfort, offering a glimpse of rural life in the Terai region.

  Jungle activities inside Bardia National Park.

  The day begins early at the park headquarters in Thakurdwara. After a safety briefing, you cross the Babai or Geruwa rivers to enter the dense Sal forests, bathed in golden morning light—an ideal setting for spotting rhinos and other wildlife. Guided jungle walks are a highlight of the experience, enabling you to silently track tigers by following fresh pugmarks, listening for alarm calls from deer, and observing riverbank activities.

  Along the mighty Karnali River and its channels, you may encounter herds of wild elephants as well as Gharial and Mugger crocodiles. You might even spot the rare Gangetic River Dolphin. Midday is spent quietly at a Machan or riverbank blind, where you can enjoy a packed lunch while observing animals coming to drink and admiring the vibrant birdlife, including Great Hornbills and Bengal Floricans.

  In the afternoon, exploration continues through open grasslands, where Blackbuck and Swamp Deer roam. Tharu guides share their ethnobotanical knowledge of medicinal plants during this time. As dusk approaches, predators become more active, and the jungle comes alive with sounds of movement. The day concludes with a breathtaking return across the river at sunset, with rhinos silhouetted against the orange sky.

  Bardia National Park to Sauraha

  After breakfast in Bardia National Park, the drive starts through the buffer zone forests, leaving the quiet wilderness behind. You may see monkeys or spotted deer along the way as you head to Ambassa, then join the Mahendra Highway and pass through Kohalpur, a good spot for fuel or a quick coffee. The road continues east through the Inner Terai valleys, crossing the Banke National Park corridor and the Rapti River, passing towns like Lamahi and Bhalubang, known for fresh river fish and friendly local stops. The route briefly climbs the Daunne Hills between Bardaghat and Butwal, offering nice viewpoints and small temples, before descending into the busy city of Butwal and heading toward Narayanghat. A few kilometers past Narayanghat at Tadi Bazaar, the road turns south toward Sauraha, where the surroundings change to mustard fields, Tharu villages, and peaceful countryside. The day ends at the banks of the Rapti River in Sauraha, just in time to enjoy the famous sunset by the park.

  After breakfast in Sauraha or Meghauli, your drive begins through Tandi or Bharatpur before joining the Mahendra Highway. The road from Mugling to Narayanghat is now a smooth double lane, but the final stretch toward Kathmandu. Around midday, stop at Mugling Junction, the crossroads connecting Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Chitwan, and have lunch at a riverside restaurant in Malekhu with views of the Trishuli River. In the afternoon, the bus climbs the spiral roads from Naubise to Nagdhunga into the Kathmandu Valley, offering glimpses of the Ganesh Himal and Langtang ranges on clear days. After passing the Nagdhunga checkpoint, you enter Kathmandu and drive through the city to your hotel in Thamel, Lazimpat, or Boudha.   Our departure will take place today at Kathmandu International Airport, where we will be transferred.
